LoRaWAN vs WiFi: A Comparison of IoT Communication Technologies

As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to evolve, different communication protocols play critical roles in various application scenarios. LoRaWAN and WiFi (especially WiFi HaLow) are two prominent technologies used in IoT communication, each offering distinct advantages for specific needs. LoRaWAN: LoRaWAN operates in unlicensed frequency bands (such as 868 MHz in Europe and 915 MHz in the US), meaning it can be deployed without the need for spectrum licenses. This makes it ideal for large-scale deployments in rural or industrial IoT applications. However, setting up a LoRaWAN network requires the installation of gateways and infrastructure, which is necessary for scenarios where long-range communication is critical.

WiFi HaLow: WiFi HaLow integrates easily into existing WiFi infrastructure, making deployment simpler in environments with existing WiFi networks, such as homes and offices. Its longer range and higher data rate make it suitable for smart homes, industrial IoT, and similar applications that dont require long-distance communication.

LoRaWAN: LoRaWAN is perfect for long-range, low-power, and low-data-rate applications, such as:

- Smart agriculture (e.g., soil moisture monitoring)

- Utility metering for water, gas, and heat

- Remote asset tracking and monitoring

WiFi HaLow: WiFi HaLow is better suited for short to medium-range applications that require higher data rates and better coverage, such as:

- Smart home devices (e.g., security cameras, thermostats)

- Industrial IoT device monitoring

- Wearable health and fitness devices
